A Group for Parents of Complicated Kids

Moms, dads, and caregivers of kids with complicated developmental and mental health needs are invited to join a new group that will meet at:

Anxiety & Agoraphobia Treatment Center
1500 Skokie Blvd, Suite 204
Northbrook, IL 60062

(Summer schedule will be announced at a later date.)

The sessions will begin by focusing on recognizing and accepting the extraordinary stressors that raising complicated kids imposes on their parents and the antidotes that research shows can work to keep parents from getting burned out well before their child grows up and leaves home.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Recover from burnout and avoid burnout
  • Restore their sense of sanity
  • Find ways to make parenting more fun
  • Make home life more peaceful
  • Decrease the emotional isolation that comes with raising complicated special needs kids
  • Achieve their own individual mental health wellness

Participants who are eligible to attend:

  • Moms, dads, are caretakers of kids who have complicated developmental and mental health needs
  • Parents whose children require more than one specialist, clinic or medication
  • Parents whose kids are labeled as being treatment refractory or “the only one like this”
  • Parents who cannot recall a time in their child’s life that did not involve therapies, doctors or people with advanced graduate degrees
  • Parents who realize that they tantrum as often as their kids because they are overwhelmed by their kid’s disorder

Dr. Karen Cassiday, the group leader, enjoys working with complicated kids and their parents.  She is the parent of a complicated kid and has years of experience as both a professional and a parent in the art of managing the stressors that threaten parental well-being.
