Dorm rooms.  Cafeteria food.  Harder classes.  New friends, new ideas, and sometimes new temptations.  College students face challenges, excitement, and difficulties.  The college years can be rewarding, exhilarating, and – if illness strikes – confusing and even overwhelming.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a neurobiological illness that affects 1 in fifty adults and 1 in 100 children.  OCD tends to appear either in childhood or in young adulthood: many people with the disorder experience their first symptoms during college.

OCD is potentially devastating but highly treatable.  Cognitive behavior therapy, sometimes accompanied by medication, can significantly decrease and sometimes even eliminate symptoms, allowing people with OCD to manage the disorder and live happy and productive lives.  But college counseling centers and health services frequently cannot treat OCD because their staff has not yet received the necessary specialized training.  And students with OCD often don’t know what’s happening to them, or why they are experiencing distressing obsessive thoughts and time-consuming repetitive behaviors, reassurance-seeking, and avoidance.

Overcoming OCD: A Guide for College Students is a free 28-page guide that explains the symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, how the OCD can affect college students, and where students can find appropriate treatment.  The guide also discusses disorders that tend to occur with OCD, such as depression and attention deficit disorder.
