Why Is My Mind Like a Jail?
Posted on Monday, August 11, 2008Question: My 20 year old daughter has OCD and she has been medicated by a doctor, but the therapy seems not helpful. She asks me: Why is my mind like a jail? Why I can’t be free!! We are looking for a center or doctors who have been specially trained for this disease. Have you any information about specialists and support groups in Chile?
Viña del Mar, Chile
Answer: When you suffer from OCD, it is exactly like your mind is a jail. You become a prisoner of your obsessive thoughts and compulsive rituals. You find that your mind is full of obsessions all day and you often feel like you aren’t free to think of anything else, or even day dream. Your compulsions lock you in a cell as well as they take up your time and demand more. The goal of effective treatment is to liberate you from this prison of the mind. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, especially ERP, is a way to achieve this goal. By exposing yourself to your obsessive thoughts and eliminating compulsive rituals, you can escape the prison of OCD and free your mind--and your life--of these debilitating symptoms.
