My Two-Year-Old May Have OCD

Posted on Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Question: I have OCD as well as other mental health challenges.  My daughter is at a high risk to struggle with OCD as well.  She is only 2 and exhibits some OCD-like behaviors.  I need simple techniques that are preventative in nature.  I don’t know if she has OCD but it makes sense to do what I can now, should she develop it, to reduce the degree to which the disorder would interfere with her development. Are there resources for this issue?

Answer: Only a mental health professional who is knowledgeable about the disorder can diagnose OCD. A therapeutic assessment of your daughter will determine if she is struggling with OCD or another disorder that is causing similar symptoms. You can use the Parents section of this web site for comprehensive information along with additional sources listed in the More Resources section. Our free parent’s guide, How to Help Your Child, which can be ordered in the OCD Guides section, would be a good way to start to learn more to help your daughter.
