Can A Preschool Child Have OCD?

Posted on Monday, September 15, 2008

Question: I am a teacher of preschool children with disabilities.  We seem to be observing some behaviors that could be indicative of OCD.  I have been unable to locate any information with regard to this age group (3-5years).  My gut is telling me NOT to force these issues and I would like info to share with other teachers with regard to approaches and techniques.  Such challenging behaviors and no guidance seems to result in more harm than good. I am looking forward to your reply.

Answer: Many children with disabilities exhibit symptoms that mimic OCD or that indeed are obsessive and or compulsive in nature. For instance, it is common to see obsessive and compulsive symptoms in a child with Asperger Syndrome.

In a few weeks we will have our new information for school personnel up and running so teachers can get questions answered and search for helpful information. Your knowledge about how obsessive and compulsive symptoms manifest with other disabilities will serve to make you a better teacher, and there are definite interventions that you might want to implement. Please note that it is also very possible to have a comorbid OCD along with another disability.  Remember to check out the new OCD Education Station in a few weeks—just click on “School Personnel” on our home page.
